Domaine De Charron 1987 Vintage 30 Year Old Armagnac
Description
Armagnac is an esteemed wine-based eau-de-vie that originated in France. Originally, it was sold as a medicinal product in pharmacies during the 16th century. In the 17th century, the practice of aging Armagnac in oak barrels began. Currently, the Armagnac region is divided into three production areas: Bas-Armagnac, Ténarèze, and Haut-Armagnac. Unlike Cognac, Armagnac is made from a variety of grapes, each adding unique flavors. Bacco grape adds structure and imparts full-bodied, rich, and dense aromas that require extensive aging to fully develop smoothness and length on the palate. Folle Blanche grape contributes freshness and fruitiness during the initial years of aging. Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes are commonly used for distilling. The fragrance of Armagnac starts with earthy and oak notes, followed by peach, sultana, spice, and pine aromas. The palate is characterized by a straightforward taste. This brandy is well-balanced and exhibits multiple flavors of smoked tea, tobacco, chestnut, and dark chocolate. It has a distinct finish with hints of menthol and liquorice. These Armagnacs are full-bodied and express their terroir. After aging for 25 years, Armagnacs lose their strength and become smooth. The original character fades and gives way to oak barrel scents, while the length of the flavors on the palate becomes remarkably outstanding.
