Domaine du Coquerel Fine Calvados Brandy
Normandy has been renowned for its apple production for many centuries. According to an ancient Gauls myth, it is believed that the goddess Venus planted the first apple orchards in the region. The origins of Calvados can be traced back to the 16th century when wine distillers in Normandy began experimenting with cider, the traditional beverage of the region. It was named after a ship called El Calvador from the Spanish Armada, which ran aground in Normandy in 1588. The establishment of Domaine du Coquerel took place in 1937, near the famous Mont Saint Michel. To produce a 750ml bottle of Coquerel, more than 13 pounds of apples are required. Coquerel Fine is a blend of Calvados that has been aged for a minimum of 2 years. This kosher Calvados, aged in oak for three years, exudes remarkable depth and a refined aroma. It is produced by one of the most esteemed Calvados distilleries. Unmistakably, this product is apple-based, with scents of apple cider and a subtle hint of oak emerging from the glass. The palate is initially dominated by apple flavors, followed by astringent and bitter tannins, and finished off with a slight note of cinnamon. Although straightforward and singular in nature, it truly encapsulates the essence of the apple.
