Somerset Cider 5 Year Old Brandy
The Somerset distillery ages the brandy in small oak barrels in one of our two licensed storage buildings located at the opposite end of the village from Burrow Hill. During this process, the barrels gradually lose some of their contents through evaporation, known as the 'angel share,' and absorb various flavors from the oak. Our brandy's color is entirely natural and originates from the wood itself. As time passes, the brandies become smoother and more balanced. Each type of oak imparts its own distinct characteristics, making a tasting in the storage building a thrilling experience full of unexpected surprises. The brandy has a straw golden color. Its aroma is clean, evoking the delightful essence of cider apples with a hint of sweet fudge. The taste is rich and velvety, with a gentle sweetness reminiscent of gently cooked apples drizzled with golden syrup. After some time, a note reminiscent of boiled sweets or candies emerges. The finish is smooth and leisurely, with a touch of spiciness and a lingering presence of oak wood. The aftertaste is reasonably long-lasting.
